South Africa’s landscape varies between the wide-open spaces of the Karoo and the hot, dry, unforgiving Kalahari Desert, to the dense pristine forests of the Wild Coast and the miles and miles of coastline that surround our country. From the majestic Drakensberg mountains in Kwazulu-Natal to the flower carpeted countryside of the Namaqualand in the Northern Cape.
If its wildlife and birding that you are after, then you’re going to be spoilt for choice. There are a tremendous number of private game and nature reserves and bird sanctuaries, as well as 20 national parks around the country, including the Kruger National Park which is known for its exciting game viewing experiences and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park which is a project between the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa and the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana. This is probably the best place in South Africa for birding enthusiasts who are particularity interested in birds of prey.
Caravanning and camping in South Africa is part of our history. From the days of the Voortrekkers, we have been packing our belongings into caravans and travelling around the country. For some it is a holiday, for others it’s their way of life. It must be one of the most affordable ways to take the whole family on a holiday for an extended period and it certainly is the best way to see the country.
There are over 700 caravan and camping resorts in South Africa, some only offer basic "back to nature" facilities, while other resorts provide 5-star quality. Whatever your preference, South Africa has something for everyone, and you will find yourself planning your next caravanning or camping trip even before you have left the campsite.
