Critics Consensus

Red Sparrow aims for smart, sexy spy thriller territory, but Jennifer Lawrence's committed performance isn't enough to compensate for thin characters and a convoluted story.

Red Sparrow | Rotten Tomatoes (1) J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Director Francis Lawrence... seems to have reasoned that, because Russian literature is so long and slow, making his movie long and slow would be the path to authenticity. Jul 29, 2019 Full Review Red Sparrow | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Linda Marric HeyUGuys Needlessly sadistic and often troubling in tone, some keen supporting performances can't save this uneven and forgetful film. Rated: 3/5 Jun 5, 2019 Full Review Red Sparrow | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Mo Muzammal Vague Visages In post-Hunger Games mode, Jennifer Lawrence continues her streak of pushing the envelope. Even if her accent feels awkward at times, she is mostly convincing as a Slavic agent... Jul 26, 2023 Full Review Red Sparrow | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Most of Red Sparrow looks slick and, somehow, doesn't overstay its welcome, even while being mostly forgettable. Rated: 2/4 Mar 14, 2022 Full Review Red Sparrow | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Drew Dietsch FANDOM [Red Sparrow] looks good, has a strong lead performance, and it never becomes boring. But, it also lacks a lot of what audiences will probably want out of a movie like this. Rated: 3/5 Dec 29, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Zed O The ending made the intelligence community seem not so intelligent. It was like a comedian trying to tell a 3 part joke with a great setup and a fantastic punchline but somehow messes up the build up thereby making the joke come out somewhat flat and JL’s stellar performance couldn’t make up for that. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review oh g This feels like it was written by a few writers who didn't each get to see the entire script. The plot constantly derailed itself, and whilst Jennifer is stunning throughout, even she couldn't carry this one. Not deep enough, and yet way too drawn out in parts, and thoroughly nonsensical. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review JEFF B this is a challenging and compelling thriller. there are many twists and turns; even having watched it three times, i'm still not sure i could tell the entire story. i'm sure some people found it confusing, but jennifer lawrence is wonderful, as is jeremy irons and joel edgerton. an excellent nuanced thriller. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review bob c Plenty on gratuitous sex and violence. But too slow to catch a cold Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/24/24 Full Review Khrystie C Whoever said this was a good movie count your days. It was slow, boring and super long for nothing, the twist was disapointing and the supposed dark scene were actually pretty boring. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/29/24 Full Review Audience Member This is an excellent film. I certainly wasn’t disappointed and I loved every minute of it. Admittedly there was a torture scene in the film that was quite hard for me to watch but I feel this film, Joy, Silver Lining's and this film have to be Jennifer Lawrence’s best films to date. Passengers wasn’t bad either. The acting and script kept you on the edge and I think this film was underrated. In my opinion this film should have at least four stars overall. I’m actually surprised it didn’t do bette4 in the box office. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review Read all reviews
